What Is SpinTech Technology?
SpinTech is a gentle, low-impact and highly controllable abrasive blasting technology designed for delicate surface cleaning. It is particularly suitable for the restoration of historic buildings, monuments, carved stonework and other fragile materials.
Unlike conventional abrasive blasting, which can be aggressive and may damage sensitive surfaces, SpinTech technology uses a controlled vortex effect to clean surfaces more gently.
How Does SpinTech Technology Work?
Vortex effect: Compressed air, abrasive media and water are combined and directed through a specially designed ceramic nozzle, creating a rotating, cyclonic flow.
Gentle surface contact: The abrasive particles move tangentially across the surface in a rotating, sweeping motion rather than striking it directly with concentrated force. This helps remove dirt and unwanted deposits while preserving the underlying material when the process is correctly adjusted.
Water-assisted cleaning: A small amount of water is introduced into the process to suppress dust and help wash away loosened dirt and contaminants.
Adjustable operating parameters: The system allows precise adjustment of air pressure, abrasive flow and water supply. Depending on the equipment and nozzle configuration, operating pressures can range from as low as 0.5 bar up to 8 bar.
Key Advantages of SpinTech Technology
Preservation of the original surface: SpinTech can clean intricate stone carvings, historic brick facades and aged wooden beams while helping preserve original tool marks, fine details and the natural texture of the material.
Reduced dust generation: Water-assisted blasting significantly reduces airborne dust, contributing to a cleaner and safer working environment.
Wide range of abrasive media: The technology supports a variety of abrasive materials, including fine and soft media such as calcium carbonate, glass powder, crushed walnut shells, aluminium oxide and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). The appropriate abrasive should be selected according to the material being treated and the desired cleaning result.
Typical Applications
Architectural and Monument Restoration
Removal of soot, graffiti, lime deposits and atmospheric pollution from historic masonry, churches, monuments and statues, with an emphasis on preserving original surfaces.
Wooden Structure and Furniture Cleaning
Removal of old paint, varnish and surface contaminants from furniture, timber frames and wooden facades while helping minimise damage to the wood fibres.
Gentle Metal Cleaning
Cleaning delicate or thin metal components to remove rust and surface contamination while minimising the risk of surface deformation when suitable operating parameters are used.
SpinTech — Precision Cleaning with Greater Surface Control
SpinTech rotary blasting technology offers a controlled alternative to conventional abrasive blasting for applications where surface preservation, precision and reduced dust generation are essential.
How Sandblasting Nozzle Operating Costs Are Calculated
When choosing a sandblasting nozzle, it is important to consider not only its purchase price but also its service life. The cost per operating hour shows how economical a nozzle really is in the long term.
Example 1 – High-quality nozzle
Nozzle price: €200
Service life: 1,500 operating hours
Calculation:
€200 ÷ 1,500 h = €0.133/h
Nozzle wear cost: €0.13 (13 cents) per operating hour.
Example 2 – Unknown-origin ceramic nozzle
Nozzle price: €5
Service life: 2 operating hours
Calculation:
€5 ÷ 2 h = €2.50/h
Nozzle wear cost: €2.50 per operating hour.
Comparison
Although the purchase price of a ceramic nozzle is significantly lower, its operating cost is almost 19 times higher than that of a high-quality nozzle:
€2.50 ÷ €0.133 ≈ 18.8
This clearly demonstrates that a lower purchase price does not always mean lower total operating costs. A longer-lasting nozzle is often significantly more economical in the long term.
Types of Sandblasting Nozzles and Their Differences
Venturi Nozzles
Venturi nozzles have a narrowed inlet and an expanded outlet. This design accelerates the air and abrasive flow, creating a wider and more uniform blast pattern.
Advantages:
-
High productivity.
-
Larger cleaning area.
-
Reduced working time on large surfaces.
Suitable for:
-
Steel structures.
-
Ships and bridges.
-
Cleaning large surfaces.
Double Venturi Nozzles
Double Venturi nozzles feature additional air inlet openings alongside the main Venturi channel. These openings draw in additional air, making the abrasive stream wider and more evenly distributed.
Advantages:
-
Up to 30% larger blast pattern compared with a standard Venturi nozzle.
-
More even abrasive distribution.
-
Reduced working time on large surfaces.
-
Excellent performance with high air-flow systems.
Suitable for:
-
Cleaning large steel structures.
-
Industrial sandblasting.
-
Applications where maximum productivity is required.
Straight Bore Nozzles
Straight bore nozzles have a simple cylindrical internal passage. The abrasive is directed into a narrow and concentrated blast stream.
Advantages:
-
Precise and concentrated blasting.
-
Focused, localized abrasive impact area.
-
Well suited for spot blasting, weld seams, narrow areas and small components.
-
Lower purchase price.
Suitable for:
-
Cleaning small surfaces.
-
Hard-to-reach areas.
-
Weld seams, corners and individual components.
-
Engraving glass, wood and stone surfaces.
WSG-WMax Wet Sandblasting Nozzles
Wet blasting nozzles are designed to mix the abrasive material with water directly inside the nozzle. The addition of water significantly reduces airborne dust during blasting.
Advantages:
-
Up to 90% less dust.
-
Up to 40% higher productivity compared with standard Venturi or Double Venturi nozzles.
-
Safer working environment.
-
Reduced contamination of the surrounding area.
-
Lower abrasive consumption.
-
Increased nozzle wear resistance.
Suitable for:
-
Work in urban environments.
-
Enclosed spaces.
-
An excellent solution for cleaning concrete and masonry surfaces.
-
Areas with strict dust-control requirements.
-
Surfaces with thick paint or antifouling coatings, such as boat and yacht hulls.
Quick Comparison
-
Venturi – a versatile choice for most sandblasting applications.
-
Double Venturi – designed for maximum productivity and large-surface blasting.
-
Straight Bore – ideal for precise, localized or small-scale work.
-
WSG-WMax Wet Nozzle – ideal when dust reduction is required or when working in environments with strict environmental or occupational safety requirements.
Recommendation
If the objective is to clean large surfaces as quickly as possible, the best solution is a long Venturi or Double Venturi nozzle, combined with a correctly sized sandblasting hose and an air compressor with sufficient capacity.
This combination provides the highest productivity and more efficient use of abrasive material.
Why Should Professional Sandblasting Contractors Keep a Set of Different Nozzle Sizes?
In industrial sandblasting, having a selection of different nozzle sizes provides greater flexibility and efficiency because every job has different requirements.
The correct nozzle diameter directly affects:
-
Abrasive flow.
-
Air consumption.
-
Blasting speed.
-
Surface preparation quality.
Smaller-diameter nozzles are suitable for precision work, small components and situations where compressor capacity is limited. They reduce both air and abrasive consumption while providing better control.
Larger-diameter nozzles allow large surfaces to be processed significantly faster. They are therefore suitable for large steel structures, tanks, ship hulls and other industrial applications. When sufficient compressor capacity is available, they provide substantially higher productivity.
A selection of different nozzle sizes is also useful because blasting nozzles gradually wear during operation. As the nozzle bore becomes larger, air consumption increases and blasting efficiency can decrease.
Having spare nozzles available allows a worn nozzle to be replaced immediately, helping to avoid downtime and maintain consistent blasting quality.
In addition, selecting the correct nozzle for the abrasive material, surface type and compressor capacity helps optimize operating costs, reduce abrasive consumption and ensure a consistent surface finish.
